8 September 2010 ~ Chinese Fireworks

Think about what it's like around the Fourth of July when you hear fireworks going off at all times of the day and night. Well...this is what it's like in China 365 days of the year. The Chinese LOVE their fireworks and set them off any time of any day, celebrating anything from a new building to a new birth. Could be 2pm or 2am...doesn't matter. And we're not talking little bottle rocket here, it's bombs bursting in air and rockets red glare!

Just the other day, it was close to lunch when I found myself in my classroom with one of my students. Just a few short yards away from the school, rockets were shooting off into the air and booming at a rapid pace, one after another, continuing for about 2 minutes. I was amazed as the two of us stood there staring out the window watching the show. I said, "I am so curious about the Chinese and their fireworks!" He replied, "Oh, Ms. Blake...you just have to get used to it. The Chinese do it all the time for all kinds of reasons!" "I wonder why they're doing it this time," I pondered. He responded matter-of-factly, "Maybe they're celebrating because it's almost lunch." : )

I caught these the other night looking out my apartment window over JinShiTan. If this is what it's like on a daily basis, I can't wait for Chinese New Year!

7 September 2010 ~ Equal Time

Since Sobe received some face time on China Picture of the Day, I thought I'd better be fair and give Maggy Mae her spotlight too!
I love ya and miss ya sooooooo much, Baby!

"Please, please, pleeeeaaaase take me to China with you!!
I'm not getting out of this box until you say YES!"

Maggy LOVES her box!

Does it show that I'm feeling a bit homesick?

6 September 2010 ~ I Love You, Bro!

China pictures of the day don't necessarily have to come from China, do they?? I've been feeling a bit under the weather and my brother sent me pictures of himself and his adorable dog Sobe to cheer me up. These pictures sure did the trick, Greg! : ) You're the best big brother a sister could ever have! I love you so very much! And you have a doggone cute dog, too! Hi Sobe! Wolf, wolf!

5 September 2010 ~ Butterfly Day

Check out these beautiful creatures who graced me with their company on one of my bike rides through JinShiTan. I think I'll be a photographer in my next life...or maybe I was one in a previous life...
I'm just LOVING taking photos for
China Picture of the Day!

4 September 2010 ~ The Old Man and the Sea

"Everything about him was old except his eyes
and they were the same color as the sea
and were cheerful and undefeated."
Ernest Hemingway

Watching this old guy in his boat reminded me of
high school and its required reading of
The Old Man and the Sea.

3 September 2010 ~ Text Message

2 September 2010 ~ Foreign Expert Day

There are certain moments here in China when I am utterly overwhelmed by the gifts of life. Today I had one of those moments. I was standing in the office of the Dalian American International School being handed a Foreign Expert License for the People's Republic of China with my name on it. My heart was full, I had gooses bumps on skin and tears of gratitude in my eyes. Thank you Universe of the amazing gifts in my life!
