19 October 2010 ~ It's Moving!
The powers that be in the Chinese government decided to turn the water off in the JinShiTan area for 24 hours today. The good news: school was closed for the day. The bad news: no water for 24 hours?! I will never, ever take precious, running water for granted again!
Given the gift of a day, I was pleased when my friend Ana asked if I would like to go into Dalian to do some shopping with her at Ikea and Metro. She has a driver, you see. No carrying everything I purchase back on the bus or train! What a gift! Thank you, Ana. I was able to stock up on heavy food items such as rice, milk, and canned goods. At Ikea I purchased lamps, a coat rack, plants, and all kinds of wonderful items to make my apartment more homey. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon, Ana!
As we were walking through the streets of Downtown Dalian to do some shopping at the Korean market, I walked by this blue tub. The sign says 18 yuan for 1/2 kilo. I was curious as to what was 18 yuan because that is kind of a high price. Most prices you see on the street are much lower. My curiosity was also piqued because you just never know what you're going to find for sale on the streets in China. I stepped up to take a close gander and realized that whatever was in the tub was actually moving!

These were awfully petite frog's legs, so my brain wondered...how does one go about cooking these cute little guys? Stir fry? Frog fricassee? Hmmmm....
You know, I hope I never get used to the "foreignness" of living in China. I hope I am always surprised by the intriguing, strange and extraordinarily interesting things I witness each time I venture out into this amazing land.
18 October 2010 ~ Go Giants!
Yes, I'm still a True Blue Dodger fan (and always will be!), but I just couldn't resist rooting for the Giants when I turned on the TV early the morning of October 18 and saw the Giants beat the Phillies (with Chinese subtitles) in Game One of the National League Playoffs.
I'm writing this on October 29 (still trying to catch up!) and I just watched the Giants stomp all over Texas with a 9 to zip score in the Game Two of the World Series. Woohoo!!! Go Giants!!
I can just hear the moans coming from Grandma Betty and Mom. Their own flesh and blood actually rooting for the Giants...it's a sacrilege!!

15 October 2010 ~ Comfort Food and Simple Pleasures
Ah, it's all about the simple pleasures in life! There's something so sweet and comforting to me about cooking Mac and Cheese. Familiar comfort food in China is such a gift!
14 October 2010 ~ Monte Vista Love
I've snuggled into my couch to sip delicious hot chocolate, ate Kraft White Cheddar Macaroni and Cheese for dinner, made applesauce with real cinnamon (the aroma in my apartment was divine), drank Good Earth Tea with my breakfast (just the smell made me smile and feel like I was at home), sunk my teeth into a chewy, yummy Power Bar for snack, sauteed chicken breasts for lunch with garlic salt, shared Ghirardelli mint chocolates with everyone who passed by in the hall, and I love, love, love opening up my cupboards and admiring the many, many more joys I have waiting for me!!!
I never knew just how much I missed these simple pleasures until these two wonderful boxes full of THE MOST precious gifts in the world arrived on my doorstep from my Monte Vista family!!! I cried with joy (literally) and hugged each an every item I took out of the boxes. I'm not kidding...I really did hug everything! The first thing I did was to tear open a Power Bar and munch away. It was even better than Christmas morning! I can't tell you how much this means to me! I am overflowing with gratitude! You brought a piece of home to me (that will last and last) just when I needed it the most. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! : )
