23 February 2011 ~ Wolong Bay

Took a trip with Michelle (fellow second grade teacher) and Sidney (Head of Elementary) to the Wolong Bay Center today to scope out the area for a field study we're taking the kids on next month. At the end of each school year, grade levels at DAIS study a component of China. Second grade's theme is Rural to Urban and there is no better place to witness this than the area between JinShiTan and KaiFaQu. Whole mountains are being moved to fill in wetlands surrounding Wolong Bay and fishing villages are being leveled and buried to create "Dalian Wolong Bay Low-Density High-End Life Community." Here is a model of what the area will look like in 10 years. (With the rate I see things built around here, I think it will be more like 20 years.) This is a pretty impressive city, but what's happening outside of this building to the land, the environment, and the people is quite devastating to see.
