26 December 2010 ~ Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

Woke up to a beautiful sunrise this morning and...
...checked the weather back home in Dalian.
I'll take 81º and sunny over 16º and snowy!
We hired a taxi for the day to take us to Big Buddha
and Wat (temple) Chalong.
This big beautiful Buddha sits up high on the hills of Phuket and has and
360º view of all the beaches. Just spectacular!
Coconut or ice cream anyone?
Stately and impressive.

Big gong.
Temple with beautiful tree and sweet little cats.

Once we made it up to the top, I could hear bells...hundreds of them. The bells blended right in with the leaves, so it took me a while to realize that the sound was coming from this tree. There were more bells than leaves! It was a heavenly sound.

The whole area was under construction. Here's a man hard at work.

This Thai writing looks like Susan. Hi Mom!
Spectacular views from the top.
Elephant, elephants, everywhere! Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and the Thai way of life and you see them everywhere you go here in Thailand. They are a traditional symbol of royal power, an essential feature of Buddhist art and architecture, and a spiritual mentor for people of all walks of life.

Even the bathrooms were very Zen...
Then it was off to Wat Chalong, a beautiful Buddhist Temple.

Looks like a gingerbread house.
Wat Chalong, too, was under construction and restoration.

Then it was back to Surin Beach...
for some kick back time...
a pina colada on the beach and...
room service for dinner in bed back at the hotel. : )
I tell ya, I'm never leaving Thailand!
