27 November 2010, Part 2 ~ The Streets of Shanghai

After walking along to the end of The Bund, we decided it was time to fulfill Nancy and Claire's shopping desires. Claire had been to Shanghai before and remembered some antique shops near The Bund, so off we headed in that directions. As we walked along, we were greeted with these wonderful views of very European architecture.
The wedding pictures...even in Shanghai! I just realized I haven't told the wedding pictures story...stay tuned!
Very European clock tower amid Chinese flags.
We headed down one of the narrow alleys among these beautiful buildings and found a coffee/postcard shop. Now, we were all quite excited about this because you simply do not find cards or postcards of any kind here in China (except wedding invitations...weddings are a very important occasion here in China). Upon entering the store we were greeted by this sign:
This sign had the most lyrical way of saying that you could address a postcard to anyone in the world, pay the postage, and put it in one of these slots marked with the date in which it you would like it to be sent in "your future." It was the sweetest thing! I found myself wishing I had the time to sit down and write to each and everyone of you. I plan on going back someday and doing just that! Sure hope I remember how to find it again. Here is the wall of postcards waiting to be sent...
I loved wandering the streets not sure exactly where we were going. It's the best way to see a new place...get lost!

I am liking the fact that the commercialism of Christmas is NOT around every corner in China, so it was actually a nice surprise to see this sight...

We came upon the Weston Hotel as we wandered along and decided to go in and consult the concierge for a little guidance as to where to go next. We inquired about Water Village, a postcard we had seen at the shop depicting views of "The Venice of China." We were told this was an hour's drive out of the city, so this was out of the question. We then inquired about somewhere local to shop. We we informed that only four blocks from our location was Old Town Shanghai, so off we went!
We were all quite pleased with the fact that the area we wanted to be in was closed, because we found ourselves in the most incredible area of Shanghai with all kinds of shops...much more appealing that underground shopping! Simply another reminder that things do not work out the way you want them to for very good reasons!
The very crowded streets of Shanghai. The hustle and bustle was exhilarating! I love Shanghai!
And I love seeing the oddest sights....
Christmas...jam packed into one stall along a crowded street. Quite strange that it's the end of November and this is one of the few signs of Christmas I have seen.
